St. Jerome

Jerome (Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus) was born around 347 AD in Stridon, an unidentified Roman town in the present-day Croatia or Slovenia and died in 420 AD in Bethlehem. Jerome was one of the most prolific Early Christian writers and translators and has been regarded as the patron saint of translators for centuries.

For this reason IFT chose his feast day, 30. September, as the International Translation Day.

Translation Profession Today

The modern, digitalized and technologized world is marked by the swift and dramatic changes of the ways we communicate. The exchange of information has never been faster, the world has never been smaller, but the need for professional human translators has never ceased.

On the contrary, the role of translators in the globalized world is essential. While the communication is flowing in a heartbeat, it is the task and the duty of translators to make sure it is flowing in the right direction and that the precise meaning, intent and style of the message remain intact.

The way the things work has changed and it is going to change even more, but the essence of the translation profession remains the same – to facilitate the exchange of ideas between different languages and cultures in various ways and on different levels. This is exactly what we do at all times, regardless of what it is that we translate – a poem, a novel, a movie, an instruction manual or a website.

This year’s Ciklopea Summer School took place in Zagreb from 22nd August to 2nd September 2016 and was attended by 11 linguistics students from Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. The second edition of the Summer School was a continuation of Ciklopea’s efforts to enhance cooperation between the academic communities and the translation industry in the region of Southeast Europe.

The students were introduced to the technologies and procedures of a professional translation environment, including the introduction to the fundamentals of localization and globalization, different types of language services, language industry standards, CAT and QA tools, and possible occupations and career development in the translation industry.

Ciklopea Summer School represents an extension of university education, providing the future translators and professional linguists with an opportunity to gain insight into the world of professional language services and practical knowledge before their first professional experiences. In addition, it provides us, as a language service provider, with an opportunity to recognize the needs and expectations of our younger colleagues and tailor the school programme accordingly.

We are happy to report that this year’s Summer School repeated the success of the first one on all levels. We would like to thank our attendees from Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, the Ciklopea team and our technical partners for making Ciklopea Summer School 2016 another great experience. We hope the next year’s Summer School will attract even more students from all countries of the Southeast Europe.

Since our business practices have always been socially and environmentally responsible, we have decided to use the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) as our mascot to raise the awareness of an endangered animal species that once thrived in every corner of the Mediterranean basin, but is now reduced to a handful of isolated colonies.

One of the rare places where the monk seal can still be seen is the coast of Croatia and it is our aim to contribute to the conservation efforts in our own country. This beautiful and peaceful marine mammal deserves to become a regular sight in the Mediterranean once again.

Mediterranean Monk Seal Group

Our partner in these efforts is Mediterranean Monk Seal Group, a Croatian voluntary association dedicated to study and conservation of the mediterranean monk seal.

The group, led by biologist Dr Jasna Antolovic, was founded in Zagreb in 1995 and over the past 20 years it has organized more than 100 lectures and presentations on preservation of marine biodiversity in Croatia and initiated several successful local and international projects.

The aims of the group include raising the awareness of the marine life in Croatia, education and development of environmental culture in the country.

The supervision audit for information security management system in accordance ISO 27001:2013 was also successfully completed.

The regular recertification and supervision audits were conducted in every unit of the organization while the control of compliance with the norms confirmed our ongoing commitment to excellence, traceability and continuous improvement.

This year’s big novelty in certification was an all-new ISO 17100: 2015 norm that completely replaced the standard for providers of translation services EN 15038: 2006, which has thus far been used as a framework and a benchmarking tool for quality system of translation services.

The new norm is largely an upgrade of its predecessor but it also brings several improvements and new features both in the terms of its content and its requirements. These include improved and clearer definitions of the various steps of the translation process, the requirements for project managers and information security, as well as the obligation of processing customer feedback.

The industry norm ISO 17100:2015 is, above all, a process-based standard that defines the necessary requirements and steps required to ensure the highest degree of probability of delivering the high quality translation services.

This unique event and the first of its kind in Croatia attracted many professionals from different areas of the language industry, as well as the representatives of the academic community from the entire region of Southeast Europe. The forum was attended by translators, professors of linguistics, IT experts and other professionals from the translation industry, and the all-day series of sessions held by the leading experts from the region and from Europe covered the main aspects of translation industry.

The speakers held presentations about the future of translation industry, technological and market trends in the industry, legal aspects and standards of the industry, as well as the cooperation of LSPs and the academic institutions, while the two panels held during the forum covered the issues and perspectives of the industry and the cooperation and functions of the associations of translators and LSPs.

The first Croatian translation forum ended successfully and we hope it will become a tradition that will help include the Croatian translation in the contemporary trends of Europe and of the world.

When we embarked on our journey through the world of language industry back in 2004, the very first logo of Ciklopea emphasized the two-way nature of translating, represented by two opposing arrows with our initial in the centre, underlining our idea of being an intermediary between cultures, languages, people and companies. We saw our mission as one of building linguistic and cultural bridges where there were none.

Our next visual change came in 2009, when we opted to keep the same logo, but to bring the name of the company into focus. By this time, Ciklopea has become a well-known name synonymous with the successful fulfilling of its original mission. The change was subtle and natural.

In 2015, after more than a decade of experience, millions of translated words and thousands of successfully completed projects that made the multilingual communication between the region of South East Europe and the rest of the world flow smoother than ever before, we felt the time to take a new step forward had arrived.

By 2015, the translation companies as the world knew them began to change slowly, but dramatically. Simple translation from one language to another is already a thing of the past – a good translation company of today is an all-in-one solution service for a complete localization process, offering a wide range of services packed with translation. Ciklopea has worked like this ever since its inception, but today, having built strong linguistic expertise, we are moving forward to the LSP of the future – and that future is now. Rebranding of the business is also the visual translation of these changes.

Simplicity, clarity and transparency are the main features of Ciklopea’s new face, reflecting our corporate and social values, our philosophy of openness to the clients, partners and society, as well as our dedication to preserve and constantly improve the high professional and ethical standards that kept us going all this time and that lead us to this point.

The opposing arrows from Ciklopea’s first logo evolved into a round shape of the new design, suggesting the cultural and linguistic exchange is now flowing in both directions simultaneously and that our mission is proving successful. In addition, it also symbolizes that social, economic, environmental and cultural processes are connected and interconnected, and Ciklopea’s readiness to continue the socially responsible work and thus contribute to society as a whole.

Eight students of English and German studies had an opportunity to gain insight into the translation work in a professional environment and become familiar with the concept of computer assisted translation tools (CAT) and quality assurance (QA) tools, while all participants performed translation tasks with the support from their dedicated mentors.

The students thus acquired practical work experience in the language industry and became familiar with the possible vocations and directions for their career development.

The cooperation between the academic community and translation companies is of great importance for the general development of the language industry and it represents an opportunity for the students, professors, researchers and other members of the academic community to learn about the true demands of the market, as well as for the language service providers to find out about the latest academic trends, which make this cooperation mutually beneficial.

This year’s two-week internship course was ended successfully and we are looking forward to cooperating with schools and universities in the future.

The first Ciklopea Summer School has been attended by 10 students from Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Slovenia who were introduced to the professional translation work, the challenges and requests of the professional translation environment, and learned the basics of working in CAT tools.

The pleasure has been mutual and during the following weeks you will have the opportunity to read the personal testimonies by some of the Summer School attendees in which our students and colleagues will share their impressions on collaboration, learning and working at Ciklopea.

CATA (Croatian Association of Translation Agencies), which is also a member EUATC, an umbrella organization of associations on the European level, is a professional association whose aim is to develop and protect the economic interests of the translation profession and to promote quality standards with continuous efforts to raise the quality of agency translation.

Therefore, the idea to organize the forum came as an extension of the association’s work and activities and the goal is clear: to determine and promote the best practice examples in supplying language services.

The particular emphasis is placed on the cooperation between translation agencies and companies, freelance translators and other associations of professional translators in Croatia. In a word, the goal is to assemble, motivate and bring together all the participants sharing similar goals and interests.

The forum will be held on November 5, 2015 in Zagreb, at the modern Ban hall of Hotel Dubrovnik, in the city centre overlooking the Zagreb’s main square. The all-day program will include speeches from renowned and internationally recognized experts from the translation industry and will cover an array of topic, from business development, marketing, cooperation between universities and industry, as well as the latest technological trends in the translation industry.

In addition to the ongoing organization and giving lectures at the universities with the aim of training young translators and having the Doors Open Days, as well as providing conditions for internships, Ciklopea has taken a step forward and announces the Summer School for students from the region of Southeast Europe in August 2015.

The aim of the Summer School is to make the first contact between the students of the linguistic studies and the language industry, their development and advancement, as well as the exchange of knowledge and experience, all to make the students, i.e. the professional translators to be, as ready as possible to keep up with the professional challenges lying ahead and to make their transition to the working world as successful as possible.

Ciklopea is taking this opportunity to invite the degree candidates and graduate students of the linguistic studies (English and German language) from the entire region of Southeast Europe (Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Albania), who are willing to expand their knowledge and advance in their profession to apply for Ciklopea Summer School in Zagreb, taking place between 17th and 28th of August 2015.

To raise awareness of their lifesaving efforts, Translators without Borders are embarking on Capitals Route 2015 – a nearly 2,500 kilometre bicycle ride from Ireland to Poland via France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. The Capitals Route begins on April 19th and ends by June 2nd this year.

Since 2011, Translators without Borders have translated more than 20 million words for non-profits worldwide. (That is more than $1 million in translations every year that non-profits put back into their programs.) The organization has also trained new translators in Kenya to increase access to knowledge in Swahili, responded to crises throughout the world to ensure populations understand aid workers, helped Syrian refugees get critical information in Arabic and greatly increased access to Wikipedia medical articles in 40 languages. And so much more!

Access to knowledge in a native language is critical to empowerment. As stated by UNICEF, “As many as 40 percent of child deaths could be prevented with improved family and community care—not through high-tech health equipment, but though access to solid knowledge, support and basic supplies.”

The importance of language, communication, and information can never be overemphasized, and in crisis-stricken areas, language barriers may literally be barriers between life and death. This is why the noble work of Translators without Borders in ensuring the free flow of knowledge and information matters, and this is why Ciklopea continues its support for the organization’s mission.

Members of the Ciklopea team were proud to be a part of such a community of professionals, who gave very interesting talks. Participants had the opportunity to find out about legal translator and interpreter training, court interpreting, document translation, EU translation, and safety issues for court interpreters, all in view of supporting the trend towards the professionalization of the profession. Some of the presenters shared their experiences in both teaching legal translation and translating, i.e. interpreting in legal settings, while others wanted to raise awareness of the dangers, problems, and challenges legal translators, and especially interpreters, face and are forced to cope with. The importance of introducing an ISO standard for interpreting in judicial settings was also discussed, and was the subject of Liese Katschinka’s presentation. Katschinka is EULITA’s President, and her great expertise and professionalism left everybody, especially the younger generations, in awe.

Needless to say, the conference was a success, thanks to the organizers and the excellent venue in the beautiful city of Opatija, which served as an ideal setting for networking and exchanging experiences.

The goal of the ELIA Exchange Initiative is the strengthening of cooperation between the member universities and the member companies of ELIA (European Language Industry Association). One of the objectives is the promotion of the exchange of knowledge via the ELIA Exchange online database that includes students, universities and companies willing to secure internships for the students of translation studies.

The forum hosted by the first host faculty – the Faculty of Philosophy in Osijek – drew representatives of universities based in Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Croatia, as well as representatives of the industry headquartered in Croatia and Slovenia. Some of the main discussion topics pertained to undergraduate and graduate translation study programme quality and type, open-doors days hosted by companies in the region, opportunities for professional training of students during and after completion of their study, as well as the EE on-line database containing students, universities and companies which are ready to provide internships to translation graduates.

Ciklopea, acting as the Western Balkans regional coordinator, successfully presented the EE initiative and directed the forum in cooperation with the Faculty of Osijek. We would like to thank the host Faculty and all participants for the presentation of their own programmes, and for high-quality and productive discussion, as well as their readiness for continued cooperation in 2015.

The principle of integrated quality management system represents a common framework of the requirements of all applicable norms and standards that are used to form a coordinated system, which is more efficient and achieves better results compared to the classic model of independent implementation, the maintenance and auditing of various management systems. The integrated quality management and information security system applied by Ciklopea has been included and described in a university textbook intended for students of the Faculty of Economics and Business of Zagreb (Baković, T., Dužević, I.: Integrirani sustavi upravljanja (Integrated Management Systems), Zagreb, 2014) as an example of good practice and the successful implementation of the integrated management of standard requirements.

At the very beginning of the Conference the participants were greeted by Ivo Josipović, president of the Republic of Croatia, Hrvoje Dokoza, representative of minister Mihael Zmajlović, and Violeta Simeonova Stančić, head of the European Parliament Information Office in Croatia.

CSR practices of Norway, Serbia and Slovenia were also presented, while a UNICEF representative gave a review of the relationship between children’s rights and the business sector. Croatian Employers’ Association presented the project CSR For All.

Head of the CBCSD, Mirjana Matešić, concluded the Conference by saying that a more intensive dialogue between the public, civil and business sector is needed to strengthen CSR in practice.

Since the devastating Haiti earthquake in 2010, Translators without Borders has been stepping up efforts to provide humanitarian translations to aid groups, not just to those working in Haiti, but to NGOs, or non-governmental organizations, working across the globe in disaster relief, healthcare and education.

Translators without Borders recently announced development of a new fully automated Translation Center, powered by ProZ.com, which has boosted the organization’s ability to provide pro bono translations to hundreds of non-profits by automatically linking volunteers to key projects that need translation.

“According to UNICEF more people die from lack of knowledge than from diseases. People in poor countries are simply unable to access global knowledge in a language they understand. Mobile technology may be bringing this knowledge closer to the bottom three billion, but we still need to bridge the ‘language last mile’. Translators without Borders is delivering this much needed help by developing a scaleable training program so that more people will be able to access the knowledge they need in a language they understand.”

The mission of Translators without Borders (initially founded in France in 1993 as Traducteurs sans frontières) is to translate knowledge for humanity. During the ceremony the minister of business and trade Gordan Maras congratulated everyone who won the award. He also addressed the importance of corporate social responsibility and investing in employees. “I am especially glad to see many public companies, because I believe they are the ones that must invest greater efforts into achieving corporate social responsibility”, Maras said and added that “CSR is not and should not be the privilege of large companies.”

The minister of environmental and nature protection was also present at the ceremony and she said that she has been successfully cooperating with sustainable development companies for years. She concluded her speech by saying that environmental protection plays an important part in sustainable development.

Other speakers at the event were Deputy President of the Croatian Parliament Milorad Batinić, envoy of the President of the Republic of Croatia, Boris Cota and others who have been directly involved in CBCSD over the past 15 years.

Ciklopea’s CSO Mladen Stojak was handed the award for achievements in corporate social responsibility in the category of small enterprises. Speaking about the success of his company Stojak said that, considering the state of economy in the country, sustainable development can seem like an unattainable goal. These companies record above average growth rates and can work in any industry. Ciklopea was named one of these companies.

Well-defined and quantified parameters exist for evaluation. Upon evaluation each of the six regions in Croatia yields a certain number of companies.
