Greek or Hellenic (ελληνικά) is an Indo-European language spoken by approximately 14 million speakers in Greece and Cyprus, with recognized minority status in Albania, Armenia, Australia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States of America. Greek is one of the official languages of the European Union.
Historically and culturally one of the most influential languages of the world, Greek is a language isolate, belonging to its own linguistic branch and sharing the common characteristics of Indo-European and Balkan Sprachbund languages. Greek alphabet is the exclusive writing system of the language.
