I have been a fan of literature and foreign languages for as long as I can remember. Over the years, these passions combined with a love for travel. This combination of interests was crucial for my choice of education and it inspired me to study Italian and Czech language and literature. I found work in the language industry almost immediately after graduation, first as a translator and later on as a project manager.

How many languages can you speak and/or understand?

In addition to being a native Croatian speaker who can also understand the related South Slavic languages, I am fluent in English, Italian and Czech. I can also understand quite a bit of Macedonian, Slovak and Spanish.

How did you become a project manager?

I applied for the position out of curiosity and it turned out to be a fun combination of my interests. Project management in the language industry combines linguistic skills, IT, problem solving, communication, organization and coordination, and it is never boring. After five years on this job, it would be hard for me to imagine myself doing anything else.

What is the driving force of your job?

What excites me most about my job is that I get to learn new things every day, either related to the new technologies or about the process improvement. I always try to think about new solutions for my teams, with the goals of doing an even better job and finding the best possible solution for our clients. The biggest success is when the whole team feels good about having done the best job possible. In Ciklopea we like to say that we prefer doing things the smart way rather than the easy way.

If you were to choose a career outside the language industry, what would it be?

Before deciding on an education and career in the language industry, I had a strong interest in the visual arts. Drawing and design have remained my hobbies, so if I were to work outside the language industry, it would probably be a creative job that has something to do with art or design.

What is your piece of advice to your younger colleagues?

Without the intention of sounding like a meme :), I would advise all junior project managers to keep calm and manage projects, no matter what unpredicted situation they encounter. The job is dynamic and it can sometimes be stressful, but if you think about the new situations as challenges and opportunities to be creative instead of being afraid of them, it can be a lot of fun!

 What is your secret superpower?

I sing in a band. But don`t tell anyone! 🙂

What is your favorite quote?

The three things you would take to a desert island?

My e-book reader for pastime on the beach, a phone with wireless Internet so that I can advertise the place online and invite other travellers to come and enjoy the intact nature with me, and lots of sunblock.

My Ciklopea story began about two years ago. I have a strong background in economics, IT and organization. Before joining the Ciklopea team, I worked in the healthcare industry and for one of the biggest regional IT companies.

I was working on IT process and software development in the healthcare industry. Between jobs, I applied to an open Project Manager position at Ciklopea and it turned out that I had just the right combination of skills and experiences to meet the job requirements. I wanted a new challenge, to explore and master a new IT niche and Ciklopea offered me just that.

What’s the driving force of your job?

People. My colleagues and the clients.

I have been enjoying learning, working and growing with all my teammates and Ciklopea as a company. I aspire to become even better at what I do, to set up the new standards, services and procedures in the language industry, to develop business processes and high quality end products, with the high productivity and the added value for the client from my side.

You committed yourself to website localization and the processes behind it. How did that happen and why?

Given my education and experience, website localization was a natural choice. I took SEO for my master’s degree. Every content, marketing or sales manager understands the importance of SEO and SEM.

Combine that with my IT development experience and you get a perfect formula for a website localization manager. I think that this area is certainly the one where I can really show my strengths.

Which CAT tools make your job easier? Can you name some of their advantages?

I work with practically all of them, but Memsource is my personal choice. The main advantages of Memsource are a very fast and easy assignment of multiple jobs, automatization widgets and the possibility to connect directly with the website.

Once you do some tweaking to adapt the process in accordance with the specific requirements of a client or a website, Memsource is making website localization fast and easy.

How can you automate the website localization process? Are there any specific plugins that can come in handy?

There is a specific plugin for website localization automatization. For the WordPress CMS there is the WPML plugin (WordPress Multilingual Plugin) that, combined with Memsource automation widget, provides an optimum value for the client, high level of process control, reduces the time and the costs and make my job easier. I have more time to focus on the business process development and to create additional services and benefits for the client.

What’s the toughest/most complex thing about it (website L10n)?

Setting the process up. Every website is different and has its specificities. Good analysis, preparation and testing is a must. Another important aspect is having a good information flow with the client’s marketing and sales department in order to tailor the localization process in accordance with to the client’s goals, short-term and long-term strategies.

A quality feedback on the localized material leads to creation of translation assets in a stable and high quality process that provides high quality end product over and over again.

How can the client’s feedback help you? Has there been any situations where it wasn’t helpful and where your suggestions were more practical and beneficial for the client?

There are examples of both. In one project the client edited the translation on their end without informing the project manager and that did lead to complications in the localization process, consistency and accuracy errors.

On the other hand, a quality feedback on the localized material leads to creation of termbases and other translation assets in a stable and high quality process that provides high quality end product over and over again.

When you’re not working hard to deliver high quality solutions, how do you fill your time? What are your passions outside the office space?

I have several fields of interest. Shooting pool, playing basketball and playing PES (gamers will know what PES is 🙂 ) are some of my favourite things to do. Besides that, I like to watch a good movie (at home and at cinema), hit the gym , ride the bike.

I have somewhat funny hobby – I like to tweak OS or game setup to perfection and after the game is running as smooth as possible – my job is done and I usually do not play the game afterwards 🙂

The three things you would take to a desert island?

A knife, a flint and Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe – it would be a perfect opportunity to fully enjoy, experience and understand my favourite book

If it were up to you, how would you make the world a better place?

Like in the Ancient Greece – I would delete all financial records and redistribute the wealth among the people.

I heard about Ciklopea while I was still working at the biggest telecommunications company in Croatia. The HR manager knew about my skills, so she invited me to test my strengths in the language industry. All I can say now is that I am very happy to handle projects just as successfully in an entirely different environment.

What’s the driving force of your job?

The clients’ satisfaction is what inspires me every day. A smile on the faces of my clients makes me come to work smiling, even on Mondays – and we all know that nobody likes Mondays! Joking aside, my clients inspire me to constantly pursue better solutions and provide them with a service of even higher-quality and stronger support.

What do you think is the hardest thing for clients to understand about the language technology and the localization process?

I think some clients have difficulties understanding the complexity of the translation process and the challenges of tight deadlines. Project management includes a wide range of activities that may seem somewhat abstract, such as setting up the project, establishing delivery deadlines, assembling a project team, quality assurance, checking compliance with the client’s terms and instructions, performing desktop publishing, etc. It’s demanding only to list these phases, let alone connecting, organizing and controlling all the segments.

What are the advantages of language technology and why is it important to use it?

Technology is as important in the language industry as a ball is for playing football. Of course, language is the foundation of everything, but technology ensures efficiency, quality and speed. Language and technology are closely related, like a medicine and a PIL.

Translation of technical documentation requires an organized approach to work. Without a doubt, consistent quality and a tight delivery deadline could not be achieved in connection with these types of texts without technology.

You are known as the Across guy. Why did you choose Across as a primary tool for your projects?

It was love at first sight. Across is a very smart tool, strong-willed just like I am, in the most positive sense. It has a lot of useful features that make every user’s work easier. This tool is completely different from the rest. It is very user friendly and once you gain a sense of its logic, it quickly becomes your favorite. This is just like describing myself. One simply senses the love, am I right?

What’s the most challenging/interesting thing about it?

The most challenging thing is to understand its specificity.

How has Across helped you or made your job easier?

It has the simplest system for monitoring and working with licenses. It provides a comprehensive insight into project history and the logic behind the project management is very clear.

What is your piece of advice to other localization project managers?

I would advise them to build good relationships with their clients and vendors on trust. A successful day for me is when I meet the needs of both the client and the vendor.

What are your passions outside the office?

Basketball is my other big passion. A project manager’s job is similar to that of a basketball player – the trust between team members is crucial. I have played basketball for the last 7 years and I still hope to make it to the NBA (of course, when I grow taller by another 20 cm). In addition to basketball, I like martial arts which I have practiced for many years and won numerous medals. Other things that make my day include music, friends and spending time with my son.

An interesting thing about you that nobody knows?

I am a former passionate football fan (a former member of Bad Blue Boys). For years, I have traveled to all the matches of my favorite football club across Europe. Those are wonderful, very vivid memories.

How would you make the world a better place?

I would divide all goods and wealth equally among all the people on the planet. I know this is a utopian idea, but that is how I feel!
