Before we begin this story, we need to talk about the elephant in the room – the elusive ROI and KPIs of localization and translation services. Unless you have decided to invest in localization with a very specific objective of such a venture – for example, localizing user manuals/help files to decrease the number of calls to the customer services department – the traditional ROI and KPI measurements will simply not work no matter how you try.

Officially or not, we are surely heading to the post-pandemic era and it is the perfect time to assess how the pandemic has changed the way we work and what is it that we have lost, gained and learned during one of the most challenging periods of our lives.

On 26 May 2021, EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) replaced the EU’s current Medical Device Directives and while the medical devices manufacturers have largely ensured compliance with the new regulation, this change will have an impact on development of documentation related to the medical devices, translation and regulatory cycles in the EU.

In almost every survey that we have ever conducted in our efforts to learn more about the expectations of our clients, turnaround time is featured among the top 3 challenges that our clients want to see resolved.

Patient-facing content includes all medical and pharmaceutical materials targeted at patients and end users who are not necessarily familiar with expert terminology and procedures.

Depending on their purpose, these materials may cover a wide range of topics, from legal information to instructions for use of medical devices, and all of this must be conveyed in a clear and unambiguous manner to make the information understandable to the non-expert target audiences.

Nobody likes the grammar police of the internet. Unless somebody is typing an email or any other material with the purpose to truly make an impression, spellcheckers usually annoy people. Nobody likes being corrected  for something so banal as language because people tend to view language as nothing more than a communication tool and don’t bother with it as long as it works. Fair enough. So why should you even care about the language quality at all?

We have been developing industry-specific language solutions for more than 15 years, and it has been shown time and again that the desired outcome of every localization process depends solely on translation/localization process and the way it is implemented.

We all like to think that we’re working for a socially responsible company. Everyone talks about the different achievements and recognition related to successful business operations, care for their employees and the environment. Editable file is one of the language industry’s magic phrases that activates certain powers such as cost/time optimization. The reason is simple – editable files can be easily imported in CAT tools and thus enable the localization teams to apply the carefully developed processes of linguistic and technical adaptation, quality control and optional DTP. Simply put – there is no localization process and reliable quality control without the CAT software and CAT software can only be used with editable files.

WordCamp Zagreb 2017, the largest WordPress-focused conference in Croatia was held on 1-3 September 2017.

Dr. sc. Sanja Seljan is a full professor at Department of information and communication sciences of Faculty of humanities and social sciences in Zagreb. Her main interests include machine translation, computer-assisted translation, localization and natural language processing.
