Believe it or not, we’ve been experimenting with MT and AI-related technologies for more than a decade. In the beginning, we experimented with Moses-powered statistical algorithms, and later on we explored what NMT-powered engines can do.

The consortium is also working on market research, an EU-wide investigation to determine the expenditure of outsourced translations by public authorities in each member state. This research will help National Anchor Points understand the current size of public expenditure in translation services, and the amounts that can be saved by centralising data and adopting the fast-performing NEC TM database.

To promote better data-sharing practices and encourage usage of the NEC TM DATA platform, the consortium will deliver a pan-European TM-sharing awareness campaign to engage national public administrations by providing a solid framework for data sharing. Part of this effort will be through a study on translation contracts in the EU, providing an overview of the value of all national translation contracts and generated data that can be made available, plus potential savings.

Along with this study, awareness-raising info sessions will be held, where decision-makers and stakeholders at the ministry level in several countries will be made aware of the need to gather and organize translation resources.

To make Zapekanka, you’re going to need:

• 600 g cottage cheese
• 1 egg
• 6-7 tablespoons semolina (or plain flour)
• Half cup of sugar
• 1 teaspoon of baking soda with a dash of vinegar or 1 teaspoon of baking powder
• Pinch of salt
• 50 g of sour cream
• Vanilla extract or vanilla sugar
• Raisins or dried cranberries (optional)
• Butter (for greasing the pan)

The process:

1. Preheat oven to 180 °C / 350 °F
2. Mix the cottage cheese with semolina or flour
3. Add an egg and beat in
4. Add the sugar and beat in
5. Add in the vanilla and raisins or dried cranberries, if desired
6. Grease the pan with butter
7. Pour the mixture into the pan and top with sour cream
8. Bake for 40 minutes
9. Let cool down completely

Zapekanka is served cold and you can use different kinds of toppings, such as berry syrup, jam or anything else that you like.

As it turns out, the recipe was created by Ding Baozhen, a governor of Sichuan Province during the Qing Dynasty, who had a thing for chicken, peanuts and spicy flavours. During his 10-year service in Sichuan, he contributed a lot to the locals there, which is why the Qing government conferred upon him posthumously an official title Kung Pao, which means an officer who tutors the crown prince.

To make this dish, you’re going to need:

• 400-500 g chicken,
• 100 g peanuts

And to season it all*:

• dried red chillies,
• 5 green onions,
• a piece of ginger,
• 5 pieces of garlic,
• 30 ml cooking oil,
• 15 ml thick broad-bean sauce,
• 5 ml cooking wine,
• 15 ml cooking starch,
• 2 g salt,
• 5 ml rice vinegar,
• 10 ml soy sauce,
• 5 g sugar.

*The amounts of the seasonings can be adjusted according to personal taste.

Preparation

1. Clean the chicken breasts and slice them into smaller pieces.
2. Stir together the cooking wine, cooking starch and salt, and marinate the chicken cubes in the mixture for half an hour.
3. Soak peanuts in hot water for 10 min readutes and remove the peanut skin.
4. Clean the dried red chili peppers and cut them into small pieces. Clean and chop the green onions. Clean and dice the ginger and garlic.
5. Make a bowl of starchy sauce with the sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and cooking wine.

Cooking Instructions

1. Use a moderate amount of oil to fry the peanuts until they turn yellow. Drain them and set aside to cool.
2. Using high heat, heat oil in a hot wok, then add the chicken cubes and fry until they turn slightly brown. Drain them and remove them to a plate.
3. Leave some cooking oil in the wok, and using a high heat stir-fry the dried chillies for 30 seconds to release the spice.
4. Then re-add the fried chicken cubes and add the diced garlic, ginger and the thick broad-bean sauce. Stir-fry until the sauce becomes red.
5. Add the starchy sauce and chopped green onions, and then re-add the cool fried peanuts. Stir-fry together for 30 seconds.
6. Your meal is ready to serve.

Madeleine is a traditional cookie from Commercy and Liverdun, two communes of the Lorraine region in northeastern France.

Although there are many legends of their origin, everybody agrees on one thing – they’re delicious and they go perfectly with a cup of tea or coffee. Even Marcel Proust, the famous French writer, recognized the power of madeleines in his epic novel In Search of Lost Time (F.K.A. Remembrance of Things Past). The role of madeleines in his work is to bring back memories and nostalgia and taste of another, lost times.

To help you recall your own memories in these final days of winter, we’re bringing you an easy-to-follow madeleine recipe, with only few basic ingredients.

*Before you start, make sure you have a proper mold for madeleines.

For this pastry, you’ll need:

• 2 large eggs
• 2/3 cup sugar
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel
• Pinch of salt
• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 10 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) unsalted butter, melted, cooled slightly
• Powdered sugar

1. Preheat oven to 375 °F (190 °C).
2. Grease and flour the pan for large madeleines.
3. With an electric mixer, beat eggs and 2/3 cup sugar in large bowl just to blend.
4. Beat in vanilla, lemon peel and salt.
5. Add flour and beat just until blended.
6. Gradually add cooled melted butter in steady stream, beating just until blended.
7. Spoon 1 tablespoon batter into each indentation in pan. Bake until puffed and brown, about 15 min read readutes. Before removing them from the pan, let them cool for 5 min readutes.
8. Dust cookies with powdered sugar, if desired.

St. Jerome

Jerome (Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus) was born around 347 AD in Stridon, an unidentified Roman town in the present-day Croatia or Slovenia and died in 420 AD in Bethlehem. Jerome was one of the most prolific Early Christian writers and translators and has been regarded as the patron saint of translators for centuries.

For this reason IFT chose his feast day, 30. September, as the International Translation Day.

Translation Profession Today

The modern, digitalized and technologized world is marked by the swift and dramatic changes of the ways we communicate. The exchange of information has never been faster, the world has never been smaller, but the need for professional human translators has never ceased.

On the contrary, the role of translators in the globalized world is essential. While the communication is flowing in a heartbeat, it is the task and the duty of translators to make sure it is flowing in the right direction and that the precise meaning, intent and style of the message remain intact.

The way the things work has changed and it is going to change even more, but the essence of the translation profession remains the same – to facilitate the exchange of ideas between different languages and cultures in various ways and on different levels. This is exactly what we do at all times, regardless of what it is that we translate – a poem, a novel, a movie, an instruction manual or a website.

This year’s Ciklopea Summer School took place in Zagreb from 22nd August to 2nd September 2016 and was attended by 11 linguistics students from Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. The second edition of the Summer School was a continuation of Ciklopea’s efforts to enhance cooperation between the academic communities and the translation industry in the region of Southeast Europe.

The students were introduced to the technologies and procedures of a professional translation environment, including the introduction to the fundamentals of localization and globalization, different types of language services, language industry standards, CAT and QA tools, and possible occupations and career development in the translation industry.

Ciklopea Summer School represents an extension of university education, providing the future translators and professional linguists with an opportunity to gain insight into the world of professional language services and practical knowledge before their first professional experiences. In addition, it provides us, as a language service provider, with an opportunity to recognize the needs and expectations of our younger colleagues and tailor the school programme accordingly.

We are happy to report that this year’s Summer School repeated the success of the first one on all levels. We would like to thank our attendees from Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, the Ciklopea team and our technical partners for making Ciklopea Summer School 2016 another great experience. A lecture on standards, trends and recent developments in the language industry was held at the Faculty of Philosophy. Since our business practices have always been socially and environmentally responsible, we have decided to use the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) as our mascot to raise the awareness of an endangered animal species that once thrived in every corner of the Mediterranean basin, but is now reduced to a handful of isolated colonies.

One of the rare places where the monk seal can still be seen is the coast of Croatia and it is our aim to contribute to the conservation efforts in our own country. This beautiful and peaceful marine mammal deserves to become a regular sight in the Mediterranean once again.

Mediterranean Monk Seal Group

Our partner in these efforts is Mediterranean Monk Seal Group, a Croatian voluntary association dedicated to study and conservation of the mediterranean monk seal.

The group, led by biologist Dr Jasna Antolovic, was founded in Zagreb in 1995 and over the past 20 years it has organized more than 100 lectures and presentations on preservation of marine biodiversity in Croatia and initiated several successful local and international projects.

The aims of the group include raising the awareness of the marine life in Croatia, education and development of environmental culture in the country.

The supervision audit for information security management system in accordance ISO 27001:2013 was also successfully completed.

The regular recertification and supervision audits were conducted in every unit of the organization while the control of compliance with the norms confirmed our ongoing commitment to excellence, traceability and continuous improvement.

This year’s big novelty in certification was an all-new ISO 17100: 2015 norm that completely replaced the standard for providers of translation services EN 15038: 2006, which has thus far been used as a framework and a benchmarking tool for quality system of translation services.

The new norm is largely an upgrade of its predecessor but it also brings several improvements and new features both in the terms of its content and its requirements. These include improved and clearer definitions of the various steps of the translation process, the requirements for project managers and information security, as well as the obligation of processing customer feedback.

The industry norm ISO 17100:2015 is, above all, a process-based standard that defines the necessary requirements and steps required to ensure the highest degree of probability of delivering the high quality translation services.

Eight students of English and German studies had an opportunity to gain insight into the translation work in a professional environment and become familiar with the concept of computer assisted translation tools (CAT) and quality assurance (QA) tools, while all participants performed translation tasks with the support from their dedicated mentors.

The students thus acquired practical work experience in the language industry and became familiar with the possible vocations and directions for their career development.

The cooperation between the academic community and translation companies is of great importance for the general development of the language industry and it represents an opportunity for the students, professors, researchers and other members of the academic community to learn about the true demands of the market, as well as for the language service providers to find out about the latest academic trends, which make this cooperation mutually beneficial.

To raise awareness of their lifesaving efforts, Translators without Borders are embarking on Capitals Route 2015 – a nearly 2,500 kilometre bicycle ride from Ireland to Poland via France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. The Capitals Route begins on April 19th and ends by June 2nd this year.

Since 2011, Translators without Borders have translated more than 20 million words for non-profits worldwide. (That is more than $1 million in translations every year that non-profits put back into their programs.) The organization has also trained new translators in Kenya to increase access to knowledge in Swahili, responded to crises throughout the world to ensure populations understand aid workers, helped Syrian refugees get critical information in Arabic and greatly increased access to Wikipedia medical articles in 40 languages. And so much more!

Access to knowledge in a native language is critical to empowerment. As stated by UNICEF, “As many as 40 percent of child deaths could be prevented with improved family and community care—not through high-tech health equipment, but though access to solid knowledge, support and basic supplies.”

The importance of language, communication, and information can never be overemphasized, and in crisis-stricken areas, language barriers may literally be barriers between life and death. Ciklopea’s mission was to teach people how to communicate their messages clearly and accurately across different cultures. She left the Cyclopean walls in Mycenae as a symbol of good translation – the translated content must be strong, consistent and without any holes, just like those walls.

Also, her name is rarely found in the books, the reason being she wanted to show that a good translator must remain invisible and that the translated text should only carry the seal of its author – provided there is one.

At the very beginning of the Conference the participants were greeted by Ivo Josipović, president of the Republic of Croatia, Hrvoje Dokoza, representative of minister Mihael Zmajlović, and Violeta Simeonova Stančić, head of the European Parliament Information Office in Croatia.

CSR practices of Norway, Serbia and Slovenia were also presented, while a UNICEF representative gave a review of the relationship between children’s rights and the business sector. Croatian Employers’ Association presented the project CSR For All.

Head of the CBCSD, Mirjana Matešić, concluded the Conference by saying that a more intensive dialogue between the public, civil and business sector is needed to strengthen CSR in practice.

Since the devastating Haiti earthquake in 2010, Translators without Borders has been stepping up efforts to provide humanitarian translations to aid groups, not just to those working in Haiti, but to NGOs, or non-governmental organizations, working across the globe in disaster relief, healthcare and education.

Translators without Borders recently announced development of a new fully automated Translation Center, powered by ProZ.com, which has boosted the organization’s ability to provide pro bono translations to hundreds of non-profits by automatically linking volunteers to key projects that need translation.

The financial support provided by sponsors is critical to sustaining and growing the organization, particularly in under-resourced languages. “In the course of our work, we’ve become aware of a huge global need, which is for people in poor countries to be able to access global knowledge in their own language,” explains Lori Thicke, co-founder of Translators without Borders.

“According to UNICEF more people die from lack of knowledge than from diseases. People in poor countries are simply unable to access global knowledge in a language they understand. Mobile technology may be bringing this knowledge closer to the bottom three billion, but we still need to bridge the ‘language last mile’. Translators without Borders is delivering this much needed help by developing a scaleable training program so that more people will be able to access the knowledge they need in a language they understand.”

During the ceremony the minister of business and trade Gordan Maras congratulated everyone who won the award. He also addressed the importance of corporate social responsibility and investing in employees. “I am especially glad to see many public companies, because I believe they are the ones that must invest greater efforts into achieving corporate social responsibility”, Maras said and added that “CSR is not and should not be the privilege of large companies.”

The minister of environmental and nature protection was also present at the ceremony and she said that she has been successfully cooperating with sustainable development companies for years. She concluded her speech by saying that environmental protection plays an important part in sustainable development.

Other speakers at the event were Deputy President of the Croatian Parliament Milorad Batinić, envoy of the President of the Republic of Croatia, Boris Cota and others who have been directly involved in CBCSD over the past 15 years.

Speaking about the success of his company Stojak said that, considering the state of economy in the country, sustainable development can seem like an unattainable goal.
